What it's all about:
The Alton Millpond Hockey Classic is about hockey, community, and the environment.
- This unique event is both a community-building event and a fundraiser for the Alton Millpond Rehabilitation Project.
- It's a chance for people to have fun together while watching and playing the great Canadian game in the great outdoors while raising funds for a great environmental project.
- The Classic is organized and run by a dedicated team of volunteers and 100% of the profits from the event go toward the Millpond Rehabilitation Project.
- The Millpond Rehabilitation Project is a long-term environmental project involving positive, creative, environmentally responsible changes to the millpond while respecting the heritage of the millpond and its integral place in the community.
- With rehabilitation, it will be possible to expand the usable ice surface to have more rinks, which would enable the event to be expanded to include more teams and players.
- By playing hockey on the pond, we're trying to get people out to see what a wonderful natural resource the millpond is now, and could be in the future, and to raise awareness of the millpond's desperate need for rehabilitation.
More Money Raised = More Rehabilitation
More Open Water in Summer & Ice in Winter = More Hockey!
Much of the pond has silted in over the years and has been taken over by bullrushes. As a result, the pond is unusable in summer and only a small portion of the pond is usable for hockey in winter, as shown in the photos here:
The Classic is a Spectator Sport!
With free admission and parking, you can catch all the action outside or from the warmth of the beautiful Pond Gallery that overlooks the millpond. Come and cheer on your favourite players and team, enjoy food and beverages, enjoy the outdoor fire or warm up inside the beautiful Alton Mill Arts Centre. |
The Classic is a fundraiser!
